Since October 2011, The Kindness Collective has been working to aid domestic violence shelters in accommodating survivors' pets. Up to 40% of domestic violence victims report that they are unable to escape their abusers because they are afraid of what will happen to their pets when they leave, and pets left behind are often abused or even killed. The Kindness Collective hopes to bring an end to the abuse of all by permitting victims of domestic violence to seek safety with their pets in tow. What We Need To help us in our mission, we are attending the Conference on.. Read More »

Words from a Survivor
Actor Patrick Stewart grew up in a household filled with violence. I recently came across these powerful words of his and needed to pass them along. His feeling that there was nowhere to go is exactly what we are working to relieve with our first initiative. “Our house was small, and when you grow up with domestic violence in a confined ...space you learn to gauge, very precisely, the temperature of situations. I knew exactly when the shouting was done and a hand was about to be raised – I also knew exactly when to insert a small body between.. Read More »

A "Wildboyz" Take on Kindness
Over the weekend, we were joined by comedian and stuntman, Steve-O, at DC's Busboys & Poets for a meet and greet with fans and book signing. In addition to being every bit as funny as you'd expect from Jackass and Wildboyz, Steve-O was incredibly kind and generous with his time. He is also passionately dedicated to his cruelty-free, plant-based diet. (Did you know he actually drives around with copies of the documentary Forks Over Knives in the trunk of his car, to give to people who are interested in a vegan lifestyle?) From blogger K Street Kate, check out this.. Read More »

Our Amazing Donors
We're once again thankful for the generosity of others. The Relan gift bags at our launch event (made from recycled billboards!) were stuffed with cruelty-free goodies from small companies. Today, we're going to feature two of those amazing companies: Earthly Delights and Just Goods. Earthly Delights creates "daily luxuries for bath, body & home." And you better believe their products are luxurious. For the gift bags, they donated the most delicious soy candles that we've ever smelled. We weren't sure whether to light the candles or eat them. We also love the philosophy behind Earthly Delights, which are "intentionally made.. Read More »

Last week, we celebrated our launch alongside an acoustic performance by Grammy award nominee Moby and an exhibit of selected photography from his new book Destroyed, as presented by Irvine Contemporary. While we write our many "thank you" notes to those who made our debut such a success, enjoy this video from Moby's performance, as sent to us by the folks at SocialStudiesDC. The Facts Behind Our Domestic Violence Campaign
Between 70 and 50% of women experiencing domestic violence, also reported that their abuser had threatened, injured, or even killed one or more of their pets, according to a recent study. Three-quarters of this domestic violence against animals occurs in the presence of children. In a statistic that can only be described as heart breaking, half of surveyed children said that they tried to protect the family pets, some even directy intervening to prevent harm. A victims' love of her pets may be used as a weapon against her, ultimately delaying or preventing her from leaving an abusive relationship. As.. Read More »
